At the end of May, I spent some days with my family at the Szarvasi Holt-Körös, at the backwater of Kákafok. It was exciting, to explore a backwater, which was completely unknown by me before. After some research, I was a little bit pessimistic, but so determined as well! My brother in law spent the whole week there, we arrived just on Thursday. The water of the lake was located at the end of our guest house's garden.

Great surroundings

My brother in law told me, I don't need any fishing equipment, because he had no take trough the week on the boilies. “Than I will use light tackle!” - I said. I hope we can catch some silverfish from that water! The guesthouse was great, equipped with everything needed to send some great days, and the town of Szarvas offers great opportunity, to spend our time, so I wasn't pessimistic regarding our holiday really. If the water really have some small silverfish, than we get the direction to the Arboretum of Szarvas. A ship called Katalin is there for taking a short journey on the backwater. The captain is famous about the funny stories he tell to the quests.

I got just the most important things

The parts of my rig

The Exner Classic Match on a simple slider adapter

The main lead

and the bait indicator right above the small swivel

But let's back to the fishing. Family holiday is not an easy thing, the car is fully loaded with stuff for children, food, movable baby bed and God knows what more. The everyday guy has no chance to find out these things. So at the end, there is no space for serious fishing stuff. I prepared a single backpack only to hold the groundbait, reel, some floats and of course my favorite cake box for the needed small parts. I drop into the car my landing net, handle and my favorite fishing rod, the Competition Match. Minimal stuff, isn't it? But I think, it will do the job well, I mean to catch some fishes just for fun. I really dont belive to bring everything which “can be maybe useful”.

This is a very good rod for short and medium fishing distance

Durable reel

The firsh perch was a true warrior

Before I start to tell the catch, let's check the tackle itself. I think it is good to choose a useful, versatile rod and reel, because on this way, we don't need to bring a lot of specialized stuff with us to the bank. Out short family holiday is a perfect example for this. The rod was the ET Competition Match, it is a light-medium rod, really soft action, which allows to use 8-12 gram floats for fishing in 30-35 meter distance easily. I was able to fish anywhere in the riverbed of the backwater. For the reel I chose the model Applause from Ryobi in size 3000. Even this is a spinning reel, it has a really precise brake system, which is also useful for float fishing due to the lighter mainline. I put 0.18 millimeter Power waggler to the spool. I like this line, because it has greater strength like a traditional line in the same diameter, furthermore it is quite stiff, so we have to be very talented, if we want to cast a tangle with it. Additionally it resits to the harder leads as well, when we adjust the shots on the line. I think it is very important in waggler fishing.

Breams come quickly after the initial bailing-in

This can be seen after I casted the rig

And this in case of a take

I used a simple slider rig. To be frank, I don't like complicated rigs. The most simplest is the best I think. The hook was the Drennan Fine Match in size 18, I used 50 centimeter long hooklenght 0.10 Competition Leader. I was brave to use this diameter. The softness of the rod and the perfect brake of the reel don't allows any tears, even a wilder crucian carp! I used a small Cralusso swivel in size 14.

Two piece of maggot, it is good to vary the colours

Another guest coming

The groundbait want a problem today, because I had some mixed Tímár Mix Elite Bream around 1-1.5 kilogram from an earlier fishing day. I put it in the freezer for some days, then I put it next to the food, to keep them cold during the three hours long journey. It is hard to fail with this groundbait, because it has a great taste (I put some additional liquid flavour to it), opens quickly and contains some swimming grains as well. Breams, rudds and crucian carps likes it as well. The corn was left from this groundbait.

Nice and healthy fish

Small but a real fighter!

We started fishing in the middle of the afternoon and in the first hour we didn't catch anything. We really need to collect just a few fishes from an extended area of water. The first few takes were really cautious, but were enough to see, the first fishes arrived to the initial bailing-in. I put them back immediately for a while, but after some time, I put them to the net for the final photograph. Plumbing the depth is always an important thing in fishing, and the time spent which was spent with it always returns in fishes. I know, how many lines are on the bed from my hooklenght. Because it made me able to select fishes depending on this. I there was more hooklenght on the bed, the takes were less, but fishes were bigger. If the bait swim just over the bed, the smaller fishes took it quickly. So the hooklengt is really important, when you want to choose, what you catch.

My afternoon catch from the „empty water”

After two hours of fishing, I put the bait indicator shot to the riverbed. From this time, I had less takes, but bigger fishes were caught. The two-palm size breams like this bait most. Late the fish of the day, a nice crucian carp also took my bait on this level. The hours were gone fast and the Sun went down quickly. The lights on the other piers were turned on one by one. The smarter anglers arrived to drop their rigs into the water and enjoy the most beautiful time of the day, what is also liked by carps, the dusk. While I was packing my rod and chair, I heard nice, friendly talk about fishing or something else. Who knows?

Tomorrow we went to a ship journey on the backwater

The lights of the dusk painted the whole landscape to gold. The wind also stopped. The uprising mosquitos makes hard to stay on piers in these hours, but I was not angry about them. My thought getting calm and peaceful, just like the surface of the backwater. All the stress, angry were gone, what we collect trough our every day life. Time stops on the bank, we are frayed from it, and I think none of us become angry if fishes are not coming so frequently. It is enough to catch some, to satisfy our ancient instincts, which drives us to get more pray again and again.

A Perfect Match: ET Wizard Classic 2,10 and Wizard Spin 3000
Published: 2015. October 19. | Source: Halmos Mihály | News

Under the colorful coat of this rod, you find a true workhorse. It is indeed a slim rod made of IM8 carbon with enough power in reserve. The neoprene handle is a delight to touch. During fishing, the rod becomes your elongated forearm, which helps you detect every shy bite and vibration of your lure. Although it is a strong fishing rod, it is not heavy at all. Yes, I am talking about the latest spinning rod family of Energo Team, namely, Wizard Classic Jig and Drop Shot rods. The...

Ultra Light Dream: ET Wizard Drop Shot Spinning Rod and Wizard Spin Reel

In my previous article, I mentioned that Drop Shot rods are one of my favorites, and their performance cannot be overestimated. This might sound biased, but trust me; I know what I’m talking about. After months of using these rods, I can safely say that they satisfy all my needs when it comes to ultra light spinning. Fishing with little soft baits cannot be more enjoyable, and, of course, let’s not forget about wobblers either. I’m not exaggerating –...

Learning more about Nase and Rubin Bolo Rods
Published: 2015. October 19. | Source: Halmos Mihály | News

t Nowadays, it is not easy for a new Bolognese rod to make a name for itself. It should be either at a reasonable price or of outstanding quality to win anglers’ sympathy. Unfortunately, these two criteria rarely meet. Energo Team’s Rubin Bolo has been widely used for years not just by Hungarian but foreign anglers, too. However, ET Nase Bolo, which made its debut in spring 2015, is considered a novelty.   Rubin Bolo is a real workhorse. Nase Bolo,...

Bolognese again! The New Tanaka Bolognese has Arrived

This year was full of surprises for devoted bolognese anglers. As I’m a bolognese angler too, I feel lucky to have got to know two excellent bolognese rods within six months. We have just introduced Nase Bolo, and now we have another rod that makes its debut. I can safely say that this is a magnificient rod too. Its price category reflects its unique features.  If I had to rank Energo Team’s rods I would definitely put Blade-Tanaka-Nase bolognese rods to the first three...
